Chalk Erosion

Acrylic on board, 50cm x 50cm

Peter Joyce was born and bred in Poole and his love of the Dorset Landscape feeds his life and work.

His drawings and paintings are largely about this Dorset landscape, which encompasses the Isle of Purbeck peninsula. Many Purbeck sites feature in his work; Winspit, Seacombe, Ballard Down and Handfast Point with its chalk stacks, are to name just a few of his most regularly visited locations. These areas are at the junction where this powerful landscape interacts with the sea.

Joyce's research goes deep into the history, archaeology and geology of each area, in which his knowledge is vast. He is a keen walker and can often be seen out in his landscape, recording it through drawing, paint and photography.

His paintings are made mostly using acrylic and mixed media on board or canvas and the work is not only about the landscape itself but also deals with the mechanics of painting; the engagement with colour, tone, surface and composition.

Joyce particularly 'revels in the taming of the extraordinary light and space of the actual experience to work a more abstract form on the 2 dimensional surface'. Climate, weather, sense of place and layers of history, erosion and geology are all immediately apparent as the focus of his art.

His work is held in many corporate and private collections throughout the world and in March 2006, Southampton City Art Gallery acquired the painting ‘Walking from Ballard Down to Handfast Point no 2’, which is illustrated in the 2002 exhibition catalogue ‘Quiet Waters’. Copies of Quiet Waters are available to purchase from Harris Interiors, priced £9 each.
