Catherine Jacobs

After gaining an honours degree in Psychology at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Catherine went on to study photography at the University of Westminster, London. She has just completed a year with the Florence Trust Annual Studios Programme, where she concentrated on developing and evolving her Uncertainties series, and is now undertaking a course in Professional Strategies for Visual Artists and Curators at City University, London. 

‘With minimal means and a certainty of approach, Jacobs conjures the eerie misplacement one feels when a beloved’s hand withdraws or holds too tight. She uses latex, acrylics and a range of beauty products – foam bath, gel, moisturiser and although she initially chose cosmetics for their viscosity, she enjoys subverting their function and making them her own’

Using a psychological perspective, Catherine’s work investigates the notions of Beauty and Landscape through the creation of high quality, painterly, photographic prints, which are shot and printed on traditional colour film and paper. The boundaries of what is still life, what is seen and what may remain unseen, are blurred and disorientating. Vivid and seductive on the surface with ambiguous scale, the work aims to provoke and tease.
